Hops and Box Office Flops: ‘MORTAL KOMBAT’
A Head Smashing Good Time Mortal Kombat marks the return of the legendary video game franchise to the big screen for the first time in 24 years. Considering its wild success on consoles, the gap is hard to fathom. Certainly Annihilation sort of poisoned the well, but the 1995 original remains popular, as does its techno theme song. The one thing most would agree on, though, is that 95’s lack of an R-rating kept it from truly being a Mortal Kombat film. That is no longer an issue. 2021’s film boats buckets of blood, and gruesome fatalities that are as true to the game as is probably acceptable for theaters. This is the adaptation die…

MORTAL KOMBAT REVIEW: Rated M for Mediocre
It’s been 24 years since Mortal Kombat: Annihilation committed cinematic franchise Harakiri. In that span, there have been 11 entries in the video game series. It’s finally back, and it’s actually brutal this time. That is one positive amongst a plethora of the not-so because the “M” in the title could just as easily have stood for muddled or messy or even mindless. Before we address those alliterative adjectives, let’s start at the beginning. Bi-Han/Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) murders Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion…

5 Video Game Movies That Are Actually Good
Movie adaptations of video games are notorious for being bad. Whether it’s Super Mario Bros., Assassin’s Creed or the Resident Evil series, the subgenre has not been the most successful. They tend to either receive terrible reviews from fans and critics, flop at the box office, or both. However, like any film genre, there are a few good movies. Very few, but they exist nonetheless. Below, we list five video game movies that we consider to be good. We will be focusing on actual video game adaptations, rather than movies that are about video games. So, we will not be including Wreck-It Ralph, Ready Player One, the Jumanji movies, or…

5 Video Game Crossovers We Want to See
Throughout the history of video games, we’ve seen many crossovers between established properties. Mortal Kombat has featured several third-party guest characters, Mario and Sonic have shared the screen, and Marvel has faced off with Capcom multiple times. That’s not even counting franchises like Super Smash Bros., which combine countless properties into a single game. Of course, with video games growing bigger and bigger, it’s only inevitable for crossovers to continue. Here, we list five crossovers that we want to see. Some are arguably longshots, while others may be more realistic. Spider-Man Meets Avengers Marvel Games has made a recent comeback in the form of Spider-Man, which is one of the…
