SUICIDE SQUAD Holds #1 Spot in its Third Weekend
Suicide Squad is now in its third weekend of release. Despite negative reviews from critics, the DC film has been doing well at the box office. The other day, it crossed $500 million worldwide. This weekend, it has to hold on to its #1 crown from several new releases, such as War Dogs and Ben-Hur. How did Suicide Squad do?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Suicide Squad has retained the #1 spot in North America with an estimated $20.7 million. This is a 52% drop from last weekend’s $43.8 million gross. The film has now earned $262.3 million domestically. Gitesh Pandya says that the movie is currently on track to finish with $300 million+ by the end of its theatrical run.
Box Office Mojo adds that Suicide Squad has now grossed about $572.7 million worldwide. It will likely pass $600 million sometime this week. Warner Bros. reportedly spent $325 million to both produce and market the movie, so to break even, its final worldwide gross has to be around $650 million. If Suicide Squad continues to do well over the next few weeks, it might just hit that number. We’ll have to wait and see.
Suicide Squad is the first movie in the DC Extended Universe to retain the #1 spot for three weekends in a row. Man of Steel was #1 for only one weekend back in 2013, with Monsters University usurping the crown in its second weekend. This year, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was in the top spot for two weekends, before narrowly losing to The Boss in its third.
