More SUICIDE SQUAD Details For New Characters, Casting Rumors, Deathstroke’s Role And More

We’ve heard many rumors regarding Suicide Squad over the past week, including plot details, potential actors for Rick Flagg, and even a possible Batman cameo. With production set to begin in April, the rest of the movie’s cast is expected to be announced soon. And now, via JoBlo, we have a new round of casting rumors, character details and more. The site’s report adds another name to the Rick Flagg shortlist and reveals the presence of new characters and who could play them, Deathstroke’s role, details on Joker and Enchantress, and an update on a potential Batman appearance. [Warning: Some Possible SPOILERS Ahead]

-Joel Edgerton and Jon Bernthal are said to be on the shortlist to replace Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg, but we now have another name to add: Karl Urban. Ironically, the Star Trek actor is also reportedly being considered for a role in 2018’s Aquaman. According to JoBlo, Urban’s role in that movie will depend on which script is chosen, increasing the possibility of his playing Flagg. Casting is also underway for Rick Flagg Sr., who was revealed to be a part of the film thanks to last week’s story leak. Ed Harris and Max Martini are being considered for this role.

-Another new character in Suicide Squad is Thinker, an alias adopted by several villains in DC lore. Geoffrey Rush passed on this role, making it up for grabs for other actors. Additionally, it was previously rumored that Gary Sinise was sought to play General Wade Eiling, but JoBlo claims that the role he’s actually wanted for is General Sam Lane. Of course, this general is the father of Lois Lane, who is played by Amy Adams in the DC Cinematic Universe. This is yet another connection tying Suicide Squad into the world created by Man of Steel.

-It was also revealed last week that Deathstroke is in this movie. JoBlo reaffirms that Joe Manganiello is the frontrunner for the role, while Jason Clarke is also being considered. Director David Ayer is said to be attempting to “get his own people” on the film; he previously worked with Manganiello on Sabotage. In Suicide Squad, Slade Wilson will be a “hired assassin that is competing with the Suicide Squad.” He will not be a bodyguard or member of the team as previously speculated.

-Next, we have some details on Jared Leto’s Joker. By the time we meet him in Suicide Squad, the Clown Prince of Crime “is scarred all over his body because of his battles with Batman.” It sounds like Joker’s relationship with the Dark Knight will be well established, which shouldn’t be surprising given the presence of an older Batman. In this movie, “everyone” is afraid of Joker, who continually “plays mind games with people and twists [their] minds.” As for Enchantress, this character is said to be “really powerful,” and she will be instrumental in the “crazy” final act of the film.

-Finally, on to the rumored Batman cameo. JoBlo reaffirms that in the Suicide Squad script, Batman “is mentioned and even shown on surveillance cameras.” Amanda Waller is also after him for an unknown reason. A full-fledged appearance from Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader will depend on the actor’s busy schedule. So, while such a cameo is possible, it’s not set in stone just yet.

Of course, as these details are unconfirmed by the studio, be sure to take it with a pinch of salt until we receive further substantiation. Stay tuned for more as we have it.

Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters August 5th, 2016. The third installment in the DC Cinematic Universe stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne and Jared Leto. David Ayer writes and directs.
