Robert Zemeckis, Matthew Vaughn and Sam Raimi in Contention to Direct THE FLASH Movie

Following director Rick Famuyiwa’s departure a few months back, Warner Bros. has been taking its time with DC Films’ The Flash. Screenwriter Joby Harold was hired to do a page-one rewrite back in January, but since then, word has been quiet on the Scarlet Speedster’s very first movie. The film will star Ezra Miller as Flash, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Billy Crudup as Henry Allen, and Ray Fisher as Cyborg.

Well, things are finally heating back up, as three directors are said to be in contention for the gig. The Wrap, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter have stated that Robert Zemeckis, Matthew Vaughn, and Sam Raimi are all up for the job of directing The Flash.

While all three are said to be “strong” contenders, Zemeckis seems to be the frontrunner. The Back to the Future filmmaker is next directing an untitled Universal film starring Steve Carrell, and if WB wants Flash to be in production sooner than later, that could create a scheduling conflict. But THR suggests that WB is willing to wait for Zemeckis.

Vaughn – whose name was recently linked to Man of Steel 2 – might also have a scheduling conflict, despite his interest in Flash. He wants to shoot a third Kingsman film after the release of this fall’s The Golden Circle, and it’s possible that he’s using the Flash meetings as leverage in getting Fox to greenlight Kingsman 3. Vaughn’s past filmography includes comic book films X-Men: First Class and Kick-Ass.

As for Raimi, he hasn’t directed a film since 2013’s Oz: The Great and Powerful. Of course, he is best known for directing the original Spider-Man trilogy. So, he too would be a great fit for The Flash. Though, if it doesn’t pan out, Raimi does happen to be one of our top choices to direct Shazam
