Rumor: NIGHTWATCH Movie in Development at Sony; Spike Lee Eyed to Direct?

Following the huge success of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony is in the process of developing several films based on characters from the Spider-Man universe. The first film on the slate is next year’s Venom, starring Tom Hardy. Meanwhile, the studio will release Silver and Black, starring Silver Sable and Black Cat, in 2019. Now, rumor has it that yet another title is in the works.

In this week’s episode of Meet the Movie Press, The Tracking Board’s Jeff Sneider dropped a rumor suggesting that a Nightwatch movie is in the works at Sony. In the comics, Nightwatch is the superhero persona of Dr. Kevin Trench, who witnessed a costumed man die battling some terrorists armed with invisibility-generating cloaking devices, and unmasked the corpse to learn that it was an older version of himself. Trench is then caught in a time loop in his efforts to prevent his death.

Now You See Me scribe Edward Ricourt is said to be writing the Nightwatch script. And, apparently, Sony is interested in hiring Spike Lee to direct it. Lee is one of the bigger names in Hollywood, directing hits like Malcolm X and Inside Man. However, he has yet to tackle a comic book movie – not counting his Oldboy remake. Would Nightwatch be the movie that changes that? We’ll have to wait and see.

Again, this is just a rumor for now, but check back for further updates as we have them.
