VEEP Alum DeMark Thompson Also Wants to Play the Next Green Lantern
Warner Bros. is set to introduce a new Green Lantern – or several – in the DC Extended Universe. The character will make his debut in 2017’s Justice League Part One and/or 2019’s Justice League Part Two, before going on to star in 2020’s Green Lantern Corps. Naturally, while we wait for the studio to make an official casting announcement, many actors have been campaigning for the highly coveted role.
Tyrese Gibson launched a social media campaign to play John Stewart, and he was then joined by Lance Gross. Meanwhile, Idris Elba, who has long been the fan-favorite choice, entertained the idea a couple years ago. And now, another actor has thrown his hat into the ring – no pun intended.
The Blaze recently spoke with actor DeMark Thompson, who expressed his interest in playing Green Lantern. Thompson has a small acting resume, appearing in the film After Earth and has since appeared in shows such as Veep and House of Cards.
Thompson had this to say on how the current state of his career would influence him playing John Stewart. “I believe I would bring a fresh look to the Green Lantern. Meaning, no one would look at me and say, ‘I remember him from another film’ which could take away from the character all together. That’s the one advantage I would say I have for this role. Also, the comic reading community has stated a few times that I look just like John Stewart which is definitely a plus.” He then admits that he liked 2011’s critically panned Green Lantern, which starred Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, and that he loves both DC and Marvel.
The Green Lantern Corps film is rumored to star several human Lanterns, including John Stewart and Hal Jordan. When asked about potentially teaming up with Jordan, Thompson says, “Partnering with Hal Jordan in a film would bring a Wonder Twins type of direction to the storyline. Those two together would make a great team and I would love to be a part of that production if Warner Brothers were to take the film in that direction.” As for potentially competing with Tyrese Gibson and Idris Elba for the role, Thompson adds, “I wouldn’t say I’m a better choice than Idris or Tyrese. They are both excellent actors. I’m the new face in the industry. The long shot when compared to the two. I believe I can bring this character to life if given the opportunity.”
Finally, Thompson explains who the John Stewart character is to him. “John Stewart is a leader. He’s been through a lot but he’s proven his commitment to his profession every time. I like that John has never waivered in his role of the Green Lantern.” Thompson surely seems passionate about the possibility of playing John Stewart. It will be interesting to see if he is considered for the role, or if he even gets it.
