Recap: SUPERGIRL S1 E18 “World’s Finest”

It’s worth mentioned that last week’s episode was another solid addition to an impressive rookie season. We saw Martian Manhunter’s transformation into Hank Henshaw, and the revelation that Alex’s father might still be alive! Sadly, we weren’t able to cover last week’s episode (blame Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), but we are back and we have new friend in town!

This week we had the appearance of the Scarlet Speedster (Grant Gustin) in National City. This is the first crossover between The Flash and Supergirl. We didn’t know if they’d ever crossover with both shows on different networks (Flash on The CW, and Supergirl on CBS), but Greg Berlanti (the DC TV god) made it happen!

Barry accidentally travels to this earth, but that’s never really explained. This episode takes place after tomorrow’s episode of The Flash; maybe that ends with him coming to National City? Either way it’s nice to bring Barry into the Supergirl world. The chemistry between Benoist and Gustin is incredible. I loved every moment between Barry and Kara. Winn also was great with Barry. The only one ruining the fun was James.

Jimmy was rustled in this episode. Kara and Barry were making our friend James jealous; this was a nice callback to Cat’s advice in the beginning of the episode. Cat wants Kara to take what she wants. The only way Kara will end up with James is if she makes him jealous. The relationships are an annoying problem throughout the Berlanti-verse, and it was really irritating in this episode. Instead of focusing on two amazing heroes, we’re given this annoying love triangle.

We have Siobhan taking on the persona Silver Banshee; after discovering her powers last week. She wants revenge on our heroine because she made her life her job. It was really weird how she became a villain. Something with her aunt being a sorceress? This episode has a lot of strange moments, but it’s still really fun. The fact that Siobhan just let Livewire, a superpowered criminal on the loose is astonishing. She definitely is a psycho. Livewire returns and she wants revenge on Supergirl and Cat Grant. The team up with Silver Banshee and Livewire was not very good, but I didn’t expect them to be like Flash’s rogues.

The ending had a Spider-Man 2 vibe, and it was a nice way to bring the city back on Kara’s side. The only problem was that Flash was MIA for that moment. Overall it was a fun episode. We had a great guest star, and a decent story. It was also nice having heroes work together instead of fighting. Now we just need to know what Non is planning.

I thought it would be cool if Watchtower of Babel had their own crossover. I had our friend Jason Thompson come over and give his thoughts. He reviewed the first half of Supergirl season one, as well as both seasons of The Flash. He’ll take it from here. See you guys next time.

Mike has asked me to do a bit of a run-in (forgive the wrestling language but it’s Monday night) to give my thoughts on the episode.

If you’re looking for a true crossover, I think you might be in the wrong neighborhood. This was definitely the Barry Allen we’ve been watching since he popped up on Arrow but it could’ve just as easily been Barry Allen from Earth-11 (No wait, that the gender flipped Earth!) who has had similar adventures to Earth-CW Barry Allen.

The point is, this was simply taking the best part of the Flash (Sorry Cisco, Caitlin or Iris fans but you know it’s true) and bringing him into Supergirl’s world. I thought Barry fit in well with the characters and Grant and Melissa did a good job of building chemistry quickly.  This was fun and I’d love to see another Flash/Supergirl meeting or even a true crossover. However, I am left with one thing we’ve learned and one question.

What we’ve learned

There’s no STAR Labs on Earth-CBS.

One Question

There seems to be a Superman and a Batman but is there no Justice League on Earth-CBS?

Supergirl airs Mondays at 8/7ct on CBS, and The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8/7ct on The CW.
