New Details on Warner Bros.’ “More Inspiring” Approach to DC Films

Warner Bros. officially kicked off the DC Extended Universe this year with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. Both movies were big at the box office, serving as two of the highest grossing films of 2016 so far. However, they were also trashed by critics, and they have been polarizing amongst fans.

Shortly after Batman v Superman was released, WB formally created the DC Films division, to be run by Geoff Johns and Jon Berg. Now, we have plenty of new details on their approach to future DC movies, responding to criticisms, and more in a new Wall Street Journal interview.

One of the main goals of Johns and Berg is to make these movies and superheroes “more inspiring.” A frequent complaint of the DCEU, particularly Batman v Superman, has been on the films’ dark tone and arguable lack of optimism. Johns says, “Mistakenly in the past I think the studio has said, ‘Oh, DC films are gritty and dark and that’s what makes them different.’ That couldn’t be more wrong. It’s a hopeful and optimistic view of life. Even Batman has a glimmer of that in him. If he didn’t think he’d make tomorrow better, he’d stop.”

This sense of positivity and optimism will be present in next year’s Justice League. That film was already intended to have a lighter tone, but after Batman v Superman‘s polarizing reception, Berg and Johns worked with director Zack Snyder and screenwriter Chris Terrio to make even more changes. Berg explains, “We accelerated the story to get to the hope and optimism a little faster.”

One of the biggest complaints about Batman v Superman is that film’s characterization of Batman. In the movie, the Dark Knight tortured and killed criminals, and he was at a very dark point in his life. Well, Justice League is going to address those actions head-on. The DC superhero ensemble is also expected to focus more on the plot and less on Zack Snyder’s controversial elements.
