GOTHAM CITY SIRENS is Still in Development, in Addition to the Harley Quinn/Joker Film
Several months ago, it was announced that Suicide Squad director David Ayer will return for the spinoff film Gotham City Sirens, which sees Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn teaming up with other female DC villains. Since then, we’ve had very few updates on the project. More recently, there have been rumors of Ayer exiting the film and/or the film being cancelled, which reached a fever pitch this week.
This week, it was reported that Warner Bros. is developing a Joker/Harley Quinn film, with duo Glenn Ficarra and John Requa in final talks to write and direct. Some sites reported that this movie is replacing Gotham City Sirens, while others said that they’re two separate projects. It’s easy to get confused by these conflicting reports involving multiple credible sites.
But now, it looks like we have confirmation. A WB insider has told Forbes that Gotham City Sirens is still in the works. The insider says that the team of Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy are “super important” and “super cool.” This project is indeed separate from the untitled Harley/Joker movie, but with that film on the fast-track alongside Suicide Squad 2, it will likely enter production before Sirens.
So yeah, it looks like we can expect Harley to pop up in at least three upcoming DC films – Suicide Squad 2, Harley Quinn/Joker, and Gotham City Sirens. Considering she was a big breakout character from the first Squad movie, it makes sense financially to utilize her in as many sequels/spinoffs as possible.
