Don’t Expect THE BATMAN to Begin Production This Year

Last year, Matt Reeves was hired to take over as writer and director of The Batman. Since then, we haven’t gotten many official updates. Currently, there’s still uncertainty on whether Ben Affleck will reprise the role here (though it’s looking unlikely), while baseless speculation “rumors” of Reeves exiting the film had to be debunked. Now, we have a production update.

According to Heroic Hollywood, The Batman is not expected to begin production until 2019. This makes sense, given that Reeves is really taking his time with writing the story and script. Also, Warner Bros. is already shooting 3-4 DC movies this year. Shazam! is filming now, Wonder Woman 2 is shooting in a couple months, and Suicide Squad 2 is reportedly targeting a fall start. Additionally, the studio hopes to shoot the non-canon Joker movie this year.

With production beginning in 2019, this would put The Batman on track for a 2020 or 2021 release. WB already has several dates reserved for DC movies in 2020, so one of those could be The Batman. There are also three untitled event films scheduled for 2021. But either way, it’s going to be a couple years before we see Batman on screen again, so buckle in.

Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
