Hops and Box Office Flops: ‘BLACK ADAM’
It’s Electrifying Black Adam was supposed to change the hierarchy of the DC Universe. Instead, it tanked with critics and couldn’t conjure enough magic at the box office to earn a sequel. Thus, it appears the Rock’s long awaited appearance as the anti-hero is a one and done. Frankly, that kind of sucks because Black Adam is an entertaining movie. It’s a flawed one, to be sure, but watching the titular hero mow down bad guys is a hell of a lot of fun. Throw in an exceptional Pierce Brosnan portrayal of Dr. Fate, as well as a more than capable Hawkman adaptation (played by Aldis Hodge), and the groundwork for a bigger,…

Hops and Box Office Flops: ‘MORBIUS’
It’s Morbin’ Time! Morbius is perhaps the most needless comic book movie ever made. Centered around a D-level Spider-Man villain, it lacks several crucial ingredients. First and foremost, Spider-Man is not in Morbius. In fact, contrary to what the trailers will have you believe, he’s barely even mentioned. Thus, it’s just a film about an anti-hero who’s uninteresting. That would be fine if the plot, script, acting, action, or anything, quite frankly, worked. Morbius is a mess. Both the titular vampire and his plot conveniently evil foil, Milo, are paper thin caricatures. Milo, or Lucian played by Matt Smith, is bad because Morbius needs someone to fight. His actions, and that of the plot at…

Hops and Box Office Flops: HULK – The Incredible Sulk
Ang Lee’s Hulk is ponderous—absurdly so—and mostly revolves around the gruesome father/son relationship between Bruce (Eric Bana) and David Banner (Nick Nolte). Reportedly, Lee wanted the film to evoke the weighty emotions of a Greek tragedy. It certainly does generate a palpable response, but it’s apathy. For a movie whose title character is a big, green, rage monster, the Hulk is seldom seen for the first hour. When he does show up, he’s relegated to fighting mutant poodles with a penchant for crotch attacks. Now, I’m not saying this movie wasn’t ambitious because it certainly was. Unfortunately, all its aspirations are for naught; and it all amounts to little more than odd familial drama…

Top 5 Superhero Movies Not Based on Comic Books
With all the superhero craze these days, it is easy to forget the movies that are original superhero movies, i.e. not based on some previous material that the Avengers or Justice League is. So let’s highlight some of those movies, the best of the best. Or at least, my top 5. 5. Sky HighSky High is a movie that, while not the most original in plot and perhaps not the most clever one at that, is a movie that is close to my heart. The movie is filled with charm and has a cast that works phenomenally well together. I always have a blast revisiting this movie. There are better…
