Don't Expect Hugh Jackman's Wolverine to Join the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Right now, Disney is on the verge of acquiring most of 21st Century Fox’s assets, including the 20th Century Fox film studio. This would put the X-Men franchise under the same roof as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making a crossover inevitable. Recent rumors have suggested that Hugh Jackman could return from retirement and play Wolverine once again in the MCU. Unfortunately, that isn’t happening.

Speaking with Collider, Jackman shares his thoughts on the Disney/Fox acquisition. While he’s excited to potentially see Wolverine alongside the Avengers, it won’t be him wearing the claws. “It’s interesting because for the whole 17 years I kept thinking that would be so great, like I would love to see, particularly, Iron Man and the Hulk and Wolverine together. And every time I saw an Avengers movie I could just see Wolverine in the middle of all of them like punching them all on the head. But it was like, ‘Oh well, that’s not gonna happen,’ and it was interesting just when I first saw that headline – it was just the possibility of it and who knows what’s gonna happen, obviously – I was like, ‘Hang on!’ But I think, unfortunately, the ship has sailed for me, but for someone else I would like to see Wolverine in there.”

Jackman formally retired from the Wolverine role with this year’s Logan, which provided such a perfect conclusion to his story. While it would’ve been awesome to see him share the screen with the rest of Marvel’s heroes, Logan ended his run on the highest note possible. Jackman dedicated 17 years of his life to the character, and these characters are always bigger than the actors that play them. If the Disney/Fox deal goes through, then have at it with rebooting Wolverine. Until then…
