Retrospective Review: AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON
There are some spoilers below. Not many. But some!
But seriously. Can we stop and talk about how this movie doesn’t feel like it needed to be a movie? Avengers: Age of Ultron doesn’t feel like a true movie, like it didn’t need to be as long, or have as many side notes. Almost could have been an Avengers 1.5, where Avengers 2 is Captain America: Civil War. We get some emotional growth in this movie from some of the heroes, and learn more about others. And we get an Infinity Stone(mind), and the birth of Vision. But I feel like this movie just wasn’t needed, and could have been done… well done some other way. There’s just not a lot of things in the story line I enjoy.
The costumes were good as per usual. MCU does well with incorporating enough realism to offset the awkwardness of CGI, so that is always points in their favor. While the story line isn’t great, there are parts that are fun, but there’s a ton of nitty gritty stuff in here that doesn’t make much sense in the terms of the MCU. Character development is great, but it is extraordinarily difficult to get character development out of a team movie. That’s why Civil War works, because you see development of the team as a whole. There is individual development in this movie, and it throws off the building of the team as an entity. And that’s what team-up movies are about, putting the team through the ringer, and watching them grow together.
I will say I liked learning more about Hawkeye, and learning Black Widow’s backstory. That was interesting to me, cause I’m a background person. My favorite part of the movie was probably when Vision came to life, and picked up mjolnir. THAT was funny.
