RUMOR: Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi Will Cameo in Episode IX, feature in Spin-Off Film for Disney’s Streaming Service

It’s been a crazy few weeks for the Master of Form III. Hot on the heels of Lucasfilm’s retooling efforts, the internet is alight with fresh rumors about a fan-favorite Jedi Master.

The Sun reports that Ewan McGregor will cameo as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode IX. This isn’t the first time such a rumor has run the mill. However, the J.J. Abrams directed film starts principal photography next month, so the timetable for signing McGregor fits with recent reports. McGregor is set to film The Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep, this fall, giving the actor a brief window in the summer to rendezvous with Pinewood.
Elsewhere, The Playlist is reporting that the oft-rumored Kenobi: A Star Wars Story could be retooled for Disney’s upcoming streaming service. The service, set to debut in 2019, will be home to a number of mid-budget films, including remakes of The Sword in The Stone and Father of the Bride, along with original films like the Anna Kendrick starring Noelle. A live-action Star Wars series developed by director Jon Favreau is also in the works there.
A Kenobi film on Disney’s streaming service could be a perfect fit. It wouldn’t have to compete in the crowded Chinese market (where Star Wars never performs well), and a mid-teir production budget could pave the way for smarter Disney films that don’t adhere to a blockbuster model when it doesn’t serve the story.
