So at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos successfully collected all six Infinity Stones. And with the Gauntlet, he snapped his fingers. As a result, half of the universe’s population was wiped from existence. This resulted in the deaths of many of our heroes, such as Black Panther, Spider-Man, and most of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
We saw a lot of people die on screen, but what about all the MCU characters we didn’t see? In an interview with Huffington Post, directors Joe and Anthony Russo reveal the fates of several characters off screen. Some live, some die, and some are “too spoilery” to reveal right now.
Who Lived?
  • Howard the Duck (Seth Green): Yes, the fan-favorite character survived the wrath of Thanos, confirms Joe Russo. Howard has made brief cameos in both Guardians of the Galaxy, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he is in Vol. 3 as well. After that? The sky’s the limit.
  • Aunt May (Marisa Tomei): Peter Parker’s aunt is safe too. However, her reaction to Peter’s death is bound to be very heartbreaking. The character previously appeared in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming, and she is expected to return in the sequel to the latter film.
Who Died?
  • Loki Actor (Matt Damon): One of the funniest moments from Thor: Ragnarok was the Asgardian play, where Matt Damon cameoed as an actor playing Loki. Unfortunately, like the real Loki, the unnamed actor is dead somewhere. That is, assuming that he already survived the events of Ragnarok
  • Betty Ross (Liv Tyler): Bruce Banner’s love interest has not appeared since The Incredible Hulk, and clearly, Bruce has moved on. Now, Betty will probably never return, as Joe Russo confirms that she is dead.
  • Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander): A loyal ally to Thor and Asgard, Sif has been absent since Thor: The Dark World, likely due to Alexander’s scheduling commitments to Blindspot. Well, the Russos confirm that she too has turned into a pile of ash. Thus, she won’t be in Avengers 4. Sif also appeared previously in the first Thor and a few Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episodes.
Who is TBD?
  • Jane Foster (Natalie Portman): Jane was Thor’s love interest in the first two films, but in Ragnarok, she was absent. Thor simply says that they “mutually” dumped each other. Well, when asked if she survived the snap, Anthony Russo simply says it’s a “potential” spoiler. Fans have not expected Jane to come back, but if she does, it’d be interesting.
  • Korg (Taika Waititi) and Miek: The beloved duo from Ragnarok were mysteriously absent in Infinity War, which opened with the deaths of many Asgardians. Fans assume that they escaped with the other Asgardians (including Valkyrie, who is confirmed to have survived), while Kevin Feige said that there are plans to bring them back in the future. However, the Russos won’t say one way or another right now.
  • Shuri (Letitia Wright): Shuri was a big breakout character in Black Panther, so if she were to die, there’s no way she’d actually stay dead. (The same could be said for almost everyone who died in Infinity War, to be fair.) While Feige says that Shuri too has an MCU future, the Russos aren’t saying yet.
  • Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon): Peter Parker’s best friend was a highlight in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and he was hilarious in all 15 seconds of his screentime in Infinity War. While he is expected to return for the Homecoming sequel, Joe Russo simply says his fate is a “spoiler” for now.
  • Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o): Yet another breakout from Black Panther, Nakia was mysteriously absent from Infinity War. The Russos simply say that she is currently out on undercover missions. In that case, her exact fate is unclear, but we’re leaning towards alive.
To clarify, just because a character died during the snap doesn’t mean they’re going to stay dead forever and they’re never coming back. I mean, did you really think Marvel would kill off Black Panther and Spider-Man for good? That being said, it’s interesting to learn what happened to other characters that we didn’t see on screen, reminding us of just how much Thanos’ actions affected the entire universe.
