Supergirl has made some more additions to its cast for season four, and one of them is a key supporting player in Superman lore.
According to Deadline, actress Rhona Mitra has joined Supergirl in the recurring role of Mercy Graves, Lex Luthor’s former bodyguard. This take on Mercy is described as “…an ex-CADMUS agent who has always believed in human exceptionalism. But with both Lex and Lillian in prison, Mercy is stepping out of the Luthor shadow and running her own show. With her biting wit and lethal brawn, Mercy steadily becomes a key figure in National City’s growing ‘human-first’ movement.”
Mercy was originally created for Superman: The Animated Series, before being added to comic book continuity. She has gone on to appear in various animated films and shows, while she made her live action debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, where she was played by Tao Okamoto. Supergirl marks her second live action portrayal.
Additionally, we’ll be meeting Mercy’s brother, Otis, played by Robert Baker. As Mercy’s right-hand man, Otis has “savant-like abilities” in assassinating aliens. He is based on the Otis character from the first two Superman movies, rather than anyone from the comics. He has also appeared in Superfriends and Young Justice.
Stay tuned for more news as we have it. Supergirl returns on Sunday, October 14th at 8 PM EST on The CW.
