Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming has been one of the year’s biggest hits, successfully breathing life back into the franchise. The reboot recently got a big boost from its release in China. And now, it has passed yet another benchmark – a big one at that. At an estimated $874.4 million, Homecoming is now the highest grossing superhero movie of the year worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). Its domestic gross is $331.9 million, while its overseas gross is $542.5 million. Homecoming passes Marvel Studios’ other blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863.4 million). Right now, we’re in the middle of Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios recently began production on Ant-Man and The Wasp, the anticipated sequel to the 2015 hit. Director Peyton Reed returns for the follow-up, along with stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, and Michael Peña. Rudd co-wrote the script with Gabriel Ferrari. Hannah John-Kamen is playing a “key” new character, and now, we have more casting news. WONDER WOMAN Grosses a Strong $103 Million in Opening Weekend
DC Films’ Wonder Woman was always expected to be a box office hit, as tracking expectations have gone higher and higher over the weeks leading up to release. The latest installment of the DC Extended Universe was originally expected to make $65-75 million in its opening weekend in North America, and this week, it went up to $95 million. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been in theaters for about a month now, and the sequel has been another big moneymaker for the studio. This past weekend, it surpassed the total gross of the original Guardians, placing it in Marvel’s top five. Now, Vol. 2 is about to pass another milestone. According to Variety, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is crossing $800 million at the worldwide box office today.
