SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING is Now 2017's Highest Grossing Superhero Movie Worldwide
Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming has been one of the year’s biggest hits, successfully breathing life back into the franchise. The reboot recently got a big boost from its release in China. And now, it has passed yet another benchmark – a big one at that.
At an estimated $874.4 million, Homecoming is now the highest grossing superhero movie of the year worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). Its domestic gross is $331.9 million, while its overseas gross is $542.5 million.
Homecoming passes Marvel Studios’ other blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863.4 million). DC Films’ Wonder Woman is at $819.6 million, while Fox’s Logan ended with $616.8 million. (Wonder Woman still retains the #1 spot domestically, with $411.7 million.) We still have two more titles on the way – Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok and DC’s Justice League – so Spidey may not have the top spot when the year is over. But, as of right now, it does.
In other news, Homecoming is just a few million away from matching Spider-Man 3 ($890.9 million) as the biggest Spidey movie of all time. Can it reach it? The film is also the fifth biggest Marvel Cinematic Universe title worldwide, behind the two Avengers films, Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Civil War.
Ultimately, Homecoming has been a much-needed huge success for Sony, and Spider-Man gets to play in the MCU sandbox. Plus, the film had a $175 million budget, which only results in a bigger profit. Congratulations to everyone involved with Homecoming.
