GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Surpasses $800 Million Worldwide
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been in theaters for about a month now, and the sequel has been another big moneymaker for the studio. This past weekend, it surpassed the total gross of the original Guardians, placing it in Marvel’s top five. Now, Vol. 2 is about to pass another milestone.
According to Variety, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is crossing $800 million at the worldwide box office today. As of yesterday, the sequel made $342.7 million domestically and $454.7 million internationally, which brings its worldwide total to $797.4 million. It will crack $800 million later today.
Guardians Vol. 2 is now the fifth highest grossing installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both domestic and worldwide. To go any higher on the list, the film will have to pass last year’s Captain America: Civil War ($408.1 million domestic/$1.15 billion worldwide), which at this point seems unlikely. Still, Vol. 2 is a massive success, especially considering how, less than a decade ago, the Guardians of the Galaxy were a very obscure team from comic books.
