Looks like VENOM and SILVER & BLACK May Take Place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe After All
While Sony is collaborating with Marvel Studios on a new series of Spider-Man films – beginning with this summer’s Homecoming – the former studio is planning movies outside of the deal. Next year will see the release of Venom, starring Tom Hardy and rumored to be rated R, while Sony is also developing Silver & Black, which will star the characters Silver Sable and Black Cat. It has been rumored that these movies would launch Sony’s own Marvel universe, separate from the MCU. Also, Marvel’s Kevin Feige said just the other day that there is currently “no plan” for Venom to join the MCU. However, another producer claims that these films…

WONDER WOMAN Falls to #2 Spot at Domestic Box Office, Passes $570 Million Worldwide
DC Films’ Wonder Woman is a juggernaut at the box office. The movie has benefited from extremely positive reception from both audiences and critics, giving it strong legs at the box office. It only dropped 43% in its second weekend, one of the smallest second-weekend drops in superhero movie history. Also, the film crossed $500 million worldwide the other day. This weekend, Wonder Woman relinquishes the top spot at the domestic box office, but continues to go strongly. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Pixar’s Cars 3 has won the weekend with an estimated $53.5 million. This brings Wonder Woman down to second place with $40.8 million, a 30% drop from last…

WONDER WOMAN Surpasses $500 Million Worldwide
Wonder Woman has proven to be an indisputable hit for Warner Bros. and DC Films. Now, the film has surpassed another milestone. Yesterday, Wonder Woman officially passed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office. As of Friday (per Box Office Mojo), the movie grossed $244.6 million in North America and $272.7 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $517.4 million. If it maintains these legs in the coming weeks, Wonder Woman could surpass every other DC Extended Universe film at…

BLACK LIGHTNING Showrunners Talk Villain, Possible Arrowverse Crossovers, Static and More
At ATX Television Festival (via International Business Times), Black Lightning showrunners Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil offer plenty of details on The CW’s latest DC Comics series. They confirm the main villain, while also discussing the show’s LGBT+ representation, Static, and the chances of the series crossing over with the Arrowverse. While other superhero shows frequently deal with a “villain of the week,” Black Lightning will avoid that trope. Instead, we’ll be spending a lot of time with the show’s big bad, Tobias (presumably Tobias Whale from DC lore). Salim explains, “It’s a character driven show. I don’t know if there’s going to be a fight every week. There’s…

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING on Track to Open in the $100 Million Range
The original Spider-Man franchise had consistently been one of the biggest players in the comic book movie genre, but the Amazing Spider-Man films’ grosses paled in comparison to Sam Raimi’s trilogy. In 2014, Amazing Spider-Man 2 became the lowest grossing installment to date, despite the huge $250m+ budget (not counting marketing). Fortunately, with Marvel Studios now involved, the franchise is about to make a comeback. According to Deadline, Spider-Man: Homecoming is on track to open anywhere between $90 million and $108 million next month. This is a solid start for the new reboot, which has a budget of somewhere over $100 million, on par with most Marvel Studios films and much less than…
