LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Boss Explains [SPOILER]’s Death and When We’ll Meet the Rest of the Legion of Doom

Last night, The CW aired the second episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season two. Following up on last week’s premiere, the Legends met the Justice Society of America. Despite their inevitable butting of heads, the two super teams united to take on a group of Nazis, including an over-the-top CGI general. We also got some big developments for Nate Heywood.

But the episode ending on a shocking cliffhanger that resulted in the death of a hero. Executive producer Marc Guggenheim breaks down this casualty and explains what it means for the new season.

[Warning: The Following Contains MAJOR SPOILERS From DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Season 2, Episode 2.]
So in the latest episode of Legends of Tomorrow, the Reverse-Flash killed JSA leader Rex Tyler, aka Hourman, before stealing an amulet for his grand plan. The amulet was previously possessed by the Nazis until the JSA and Legends recovered it. This was an unexpected development, as we had just met Hourman in the season one finale and this episode.

Marc Guggenheim explains this decision to Entertainment Weekly, as well as how to follow up on last year’s finale. “When we introduced Hourman, we actually had a whole bunch of different potential scenarios. One of the things we talked a lot about was at what point do we show the audience the moments just after the end of [episode] 116? We talked a lot about how we were going to reveal the information, all the different ways to deal with the ramifications of 116. We had a lot of different notions that were fighting their way to prominence in the writers’ room, and this is obviously the one we went with.”

Unsurprisingly, the next episode will deal directly with Vixen’s response to the death as she joins the Waverider crew, despite her lack of trust. “You have a clue to it in Rex’s final words to her,” says Guggenheim. “If you’re Vixen and you’ve got Rex Tyler dying in your arms and you heard the words, ‘time traveler,’ who would you think is responsible?”

Of course, this is only the latest step in Reverse-Flash’s plan, on which he is collaborating with Damien Darhk. But when will we meet the rest of the Legion of Doom? Well, Guggenheim confirms that both Captain Cold and Malcolm Merlyn will join the team in episode eight, which is the midseason finale. But for those who want to see these characters sooner, Cold will be back on next week’s episode of The Flash, while Merlyn will appear in Arrow‘s 100th episode.
