SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING on Track to Open in the $100 Million Range

The original Spider-Man franchise had consistently been one of the biggest players in the comic book movie genre, but the Amazing Spider-Man films’ grosses paled in comparison to Sam Raimi’s trilogy. In 2014, Amazing Spider-Man 2 became the lowest grossing installment to date, despite the huge $250m+ budget (not counting marketing). Fortunately, with Marvel Studios now involved, the franchise is about to make a comeback.

According to Deadline, Spider-Man: Homecoming is on track to open anywhere between $90 million and $108 million next month. This is a solid start for the new reboot, which has a budget of somewhere over $100 million, on par with most Marvel Studios films and much less than Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s. If Homecoming hits $100 million in its opening weekend, it will be the fourth movie of 2017 to do so, following Beauty and the Beast, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Wonder Woman.

Of course, these are just early projections that are subject to change. They can easily go higher or lower as we draw closer to the movie’s release. Word-of-mouth from audiences and critics will be deciding factors, while there’s still a few weeks left for that final marketing push. But one thing that will help Homecoming is its ties to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Iron Man playing a role and Spidey himself showing up in last year’s Captain America: Civil War. That should give it an advantage over past Spider-Man films. But, again, anything can change in a few weeks.

Stay tuned for more updates as we have them.
