Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming has been one of the year’s biggest hits, successfully breathing life back into the franchise. The reboot recently got a big boost from its release in China. And now, it has passed yet another benchmark – a big one at that. At an estimated $874.4 million, Homecoming is now the highest grossing superhero movie of the year worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). Its domestic gross is $331.9 million, while its overseas gross is $542.5 million. Homecoming passes Marvel Studios’ other blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863.4 million). Rumor: Two Characters Have Been Cut from JUSTICE LEAGUE
We’re now less than two months from the release of DC Films’ Justice League, which is now well into post-production following lengthy reshoots. Apparently, Warner Bros. is now testing a cut of the movie to lucky audiences. While specific details are (obviously) under wraps, rumor has it that this cut has removed two characters from the film. Sources tell Batman-News that Iris West, played by Kiersey Clemons, has been cut from Justice League. Damon Lindelof’s WATCHMEN is Getting a Pilot Order
Alan Moore’s Watchmen is once again looking to be adapted, this time by Damon Lindelof. The Hollywood Reporter reports that HBO has ordered a pilot for the Lindelof project. The deal with HBO will also commission additional scripts for a potential series order. If the Lindelof project makes it before cameras, it will be the second adaptation of the beloved graphic novel after Zack Snyder’s 2009 film. Reviews were generally mixed for that film, with some reviewers considering the narrative to be too dense for a feature film. Director Matthew Vaughn has a long history with comic book movies. The filmmaker has made 2010’s Kick-Ass, 2011’s X-Men: First Class, and the two Kingsman movies. After a series of short promos and other marketing, Netflix has finally released a full trailer for its next original Marvel series, The Punisher. The trailer showcases Frank Castle’s mission, fueled by the loss of his family and a mysterious conspiracy.
