Opinion: Why Venom Should Be the Spider-Man of Sony’s Marvel Universe
No matter if you are in camp “hype” or camp “I hope this bomb,” it does not change the fact that there has been a controversy about this since day one. I’m of course talking about the idea of giving Venom an origin separate to Spider-Man. As a fan of comic books in general, I have to admit that I’m in the camp of why? Why can’t they do that? If anything, I think you could cover some interesting areas with Venom without connecting to a Spider-Man alter ego. Before you attack me with your nuclear bombs, pitchforks or what have you, allow me to explain. With the expected absorption of…

FEATURE: Five Characters We Want to See in VENOM 2
Sony has big franchise plans for Venom if it succeeds, hoping to expand the universe with sequels and spinoffs. While a sequel hasn’t been formally announced just yet, the film is expected to lay the groundwork for future installments. For example, Woody Harrelson says that he has a small role in Venom, but it sets up a bigger role in the sequel. So, assuming Venom gets a sequel, which characters will appear? Here, we list five characters that we’d like to see. We won’t be including Carnage, since he is rumored to be Harrelson’s character. Tombstone Lonnie Lincoln is a hitman and enforcer in New York, serving as one of Spider-Man’s…

VENOM Gets a PG-13 Rating and Eyes a New October Record
We are Venom and so are you! We’re just a short three weeks away from Venom infecting the cinema, and it’s pretty good news all around. First up, the MPAA has officially given Venom a PG-13 rating. AMC lists the film’s runtime at 1 hour 52 minutes, putting it right at a comfortable spot that shouldn’t overstay its welcome. Elsewhere, the Sony spin-off appears to be one for the record books. Updated tracking puts Venom in the $60-70 million opening weekend range, which would set a new October record. The current record holder is Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, which bowed at $55.7 million in 2013. Venom is positioned as the first…

Lord and Miller are Bringing the Spider-Verse to New York Comic Con
Chris Miller and Phil Lord. You know, the guys Ron Howard replaced. The duo have a reputation for crafting movies with heart and comedic flare that blow the doors off genre trappings. Later this year, they’re poised to do it again. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is the first big Spider-Man film where the main protagonist isn’t Peter Parker (even though Parker is part of the movie). This time Miles Morales takes the spotlight, and meets a bunch of different Spider-Persons along the way. Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy, and Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse To gear up for the film’s marketing, Lord and Miller are heading to New City Comic-Con…

SONG REVIEW: “Venom” by Eminem
It isn’t too often that Marshall Mathers drops a new sick beat. But these are uncommon times, and uncommon times call for uncommon measures. Take Sony’s latest motion picture: Venom, starring Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road, Star Trek: Nemesis) and Riz Ahmed (“Rogue One? Rogue One.”). Venom is a pretty good what if: What if Venom existed separate from Spider-Man? What if Venom was sorta-kinda-maybe in the MCU but also definitely-maybe-sorta not? And today, we have another what if to ask: What if Eminem contributed a song to a superhero film? Wonder no more, ladies and gents, for Slim Shady’s “Venom” has arrived. “Venom” is a pretty good movie…

Venom has added yet another talented actor to an already star studded cast. According to THR, Ron Cephas Jones (This is Us, Luke Cage) will be joining Sony’s anti-hero flick. There’s no word on who Jones will be playing, but we can’t wait to see what he adds to the film. Jones will be joining Tom Hardy, Jenny Slate, Woody Harrelson, Riz Ahmad, and Michelle Williams. Venom be the first in a new line of comic book films from Sony Pictures, which they hope will kick off a Cinematic Universe, with films like Morbius, Kraven The Hunter, Silver Sable, Black Cat, and Silk already in early development. VENOM Might Be Projected To Shatter Box Office Records, But Did Sony Make The Right Call?
As of now, Sony’s Venom is projected to shatter October’s box office records with a $65-$85 million opening weekend (Source: BoxOfficePro). One must remember since Venom still has less than two months to go before it hits theaters, the numbers will most definitely change. Most likely in Sony’s favor. This may sound great, but the real test is when the reviews hit the internet. If this movie can garner favorable reviews, then Venom‘s staying power could make this a much needed win for Sony. We’ll have to wait and see. The bigger question you should be asking yourself: Are you happy that it’s going to be rated PG-13? Also, by…

Movie News Bits: Marvel and Sony Edition
Welcome back to Movie News Bits. Here, we have some news on two Sony Marvel movies, a surprise character who was cut from Avengers: Infinity War, why one Marvel movie may never happen, and a director who expresses interest in the franchise. Evangeline Lilly finally debuted as The Wasp in this summer’s Ant-Man and The Wasp, and her performance was widely loved. The positive buzz has led to fans wanting a proper solo film for Wasp, but Lilly doesn’t want that. Why? At Fan Expo Boston last weekend, Lilly says she prefers to see Wasp teaming up with others. “…I actually don’t like the idea of a Wasp standalone film, because…

Sony Outlines Slate for its Marvel Movie Universe – SILVER SABLE, BLACK CAT, JACKPOT, VENOM’s Rating and More
We’ve known for a while that Sony is planning its own Marvel Universe, using various characters from Spider-Man lore. Venom kicks things off this fall, while the studio put Silver & Black, Morbius the Living Vampire, Nightwatch, Silk, and Kraven the Hunter into development. Now, the studio has made some major changes to its slate. Sony is ready to go in on creating sequels and spinoffs if Venom is a hit. And, based on long-range tracking, it sounds like the film will at least have a good opening. The franchise already has an internal name too: Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters, or SUMC for short. As part of the studio’s reworking,…
