While 2 Fast 2 Furious‘ Devon Aoki was initially cast as Katana for Arrow‘s third season, the actress has now dropped out of the role due to scheduling conflicts. According to Deadline, she has been replaced by The Wolverine actress Rila Fukushima. In the X-Men spin-off, Fukushima played Yukio, an assassin who ended up being one of the film’s most memorable characters. Now, she will be playing Tatsu Yamashiro in a key recurring role for Season 3 of Arrow.
The CW series’ version of Katana will be featured only in the flashback portions (for now). She will serve as one of Oliver’s mentors during his time in Hong Kong, and she has a significant influence on his evolution into The Arrow. Katana is a DC character that has been featured a little more prominently in recent projects – such as the New 52 Justice League of America comic and the Beware the Batman animated series – so it makes sense that she is one of the latest additions to the growing world of Arrow. The hit series returns to The CW on October 8th.
