SUICIDE SQUAD Update: Jake Gyllenhaal Passes On Rick Flagg Role

It was recently revealed that Tom Hardy had dropped out of Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad movie. The initial reason given was the actor’s busy schedule over the next few months, while other sources say that the exit was due to Hardy’s dislike of the most recent script. Either way, the search is on to find a new actor to play Rick Flagg. The studio’s first choice for replacing Hardy in the role was Jake Gyllenhaal, who previously worked with director David Ayer on End of Watch. Sadly, the two will not be reuniting for the DC supervillain film.
Variety has confirmed that Gyllenhaal has passed on an offer to play Flagg in Suicide Squad. The actor’s reason for turning the role down was not given. The movie doesn’t start production until April, so there’s still plenty of time to find another actor to play Flagg. Gyllenhaal has built an impressive resume over the past couple years, and he’s coming off the heels of a critically acclaimed performance in Nightcrawler. Hopefully, he will find the right role in a comic book movie in the future.
Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters August 5th, 2016. The third installment in the DC Cinematic Universe stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne and Jared Leto. David Ayer writes and directs.
