The cast of Preacher continues
to grow.  Following on the announcement that Dominic Cooper has been given the title role, Deadline is reporting that W
Earl Brown will join the show as potential villain “Hugo Root.”
Brown broke into acting playing a paramedic in the Ron
Howard film, Backdraft.  He worked a lot both in television and film
during the nineties appearing in projects as diverse as Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and Seinfeld.  In 2004 he started a long run on the HBO
series, Deadwood.  He appeared in nearly forty episodes as
“Dan Dority.”  More recently,
he’s had roles in The Lone Ranger,
Chicago Fire
and Wild.  Later this year, he’ll appear in the film Black Mass starring Johnny Depp and
Benedict Cumberbatch. (imdb)
Hugo Root is the father of Arseface.  He’s a mean-spirited local sheriff and
alcoholic.  After a run-in with Jesse and
the Saint of Killers leaves most of his men dead; Root kidnaps Tulip to force a
confrontation with Jesse.  In a misuse of
his powers, Jesse leaves Root maimed and the man commits suicide.  This leads Arseface to seek Jesse and his
friends in the comics.
In the pilot, Root is described as: “A flinty-eyed, conspiracy-credulous redneck
who is not a fool and has a vulnerability to him.
