NEW MUTANTS Will Be a "Full-Fledged Horror Movie"; Rosario Dawson in Talks to Join
After several years in development, Fox’s latest X-Men spinoff, New Mutants, is coming. The film will begin production in July for an April 13th, 2018 release. Josh Boone is directing from a script he co-wrote with Knate Lee, while Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy are set to star as Wolfsbane and Magik, respectively.
Now, more new details are revealed. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Boone tells us what to expect from New Mutants, promising something very different for the X-Men franchise. “We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.” Boone goes on to recall his love for Marvel comics as a kid, and how that inspires him as a filmmaker today. For the rest of interview, click HERE.
Additionally, EW has shared a new, albeit unconfirmed, plot synopsis for New Mutants. “Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world – they’re just trying to save themselves.” Meanwhile, the site adds that the movie is targeting a PG-13 rating, while actor Henry Zaga will play Sunspot.
Another actor joining the project is Rosario Dawson, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Dawson is in talks to play Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a mentor figure to the team “…who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself.” This marks Dawson’s latest comic book role; she plays Claire Temple in the Marvel Netflix shows, she voices Batgirl in The LEGO Batman Movie, and she had roles in Sin City and Men in Black II. That’s not even including her multiple animated projects with DC.
THR also confirms that New Mutants will not include Professor X or Storm, despite last year’s rumors. There’s no word on whether any other previously established characters from the X-Men franchise will appear, but based on Boone’s comments about it being “very different,” don’t be surprised if it doesn’t happen.
