Could AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Be the First Summer Movie to Gross $2 Billion?

Avengers: Infinity War has been a box office smash like no other, earning the biggest opening weekend in history and racing to $1 billion faster than any other film. This has led fans to speculate that the movie could actually reach $2 billion at the worldwide box office, and now, a new report says it’s a legitimate possibility.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Infinity War is the first summer movie that has a shot at nearing $2 billion, if not actually cracking it. So far, only three films have ever hit that figure – Avatar, Titanic, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And all three of those movies came out around Christmas.

Meanwhile, the biggest summer movie ever is Jurassic World, which grossed $1.6 billion back in 2015. Currently, Infinity War is pacing ahead of that movie by 12%, or nearly $50 million.

Analysts are predicting that Infinity War will wind up in the $1.8 billion to $2 billion range, with at least $1.1-1.2 billion coming from overseas. Meanwhile, Exhibitor Relations’ Jeff Bock suggests that the film could hit $700 million or even $725 million domestically, depending on its hold this weekend.

In addition to strong word-of-mouth and its huge opening, there are other factors benefiting Infinity War. For example, its last-minute move from May 4th to April 27th gave it three weeks with zero competition. There won’t be any other blockbusters until Deadpool 2 and Solo: A Star Wars Story later this month.

To be fair, it’s still early days, and we don’t know exactly what Infinity War‘s legs will be like in the next few weeks. But so far, the film has been an absolute monster at the box office, and it wouldn’t be shocking if it does become the biggest summer movie in history. Will it be big enough to join the $2 billion club? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Stay tuned for more box office updates as we have them.
