Warner Bros. Developing AQUAMAN Spinoff About The Trench
DC Films‘ Aquaman was a huge success, breathing new life into the mega-franchise. Fans have been waiting on word about the inevitable sequel. But while we wait, Warner Bros. looks to be expanding the franchise in the form of a spinoff.
A spinoff film about The Trench is in development, as screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald have been hired to tackle the script. Aquaman director James Wan will produce alongside Peter Safran. The spinoff, which will have a “horror-tinged” tone, will have a much smaller budget than your typical DC film. It will also be set in the kingdom of The Trench and not feature any major characters from Aquaman.
The Trench is a monstrous race of aquatic beings recently introduced in the New 52 comics. In the Aquaman movie, the Trench kingdom is a platform used for executions. Arthur Curry’s mother, Atlanna, was sent there to be executed….but we know how that turned out. The Trench sequence was also one of the most praised scenes in Aquaman, so expanding that into a full movie sounds cool.
As for Aquaman 2, major players like Wan and star Jason Momoa are said to be taking a break after the first movie. So, despite recent reports, a sequel has not been seriously discussed at this point. But considering how massive Aquaman was, there’s no way they don’t greenlight a sequel. The big question now is when.
Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
