BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN Costume Designer Discusses Wonder Woman’s Costume And Presenting The Character In “Full Glory”

While we wait for our first looks at the new costumes for Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, we have more details from Batman vs. Superman costume designer Michael Wilkinson. Speaking with The Wrap (thanks to CBM for the transcription), the American Hustle designer talks more about his highly anticipated work on the Man of Steel sequel. “I designed the new Batsuit. I’m designing the new Wonder Woman costume, I’m tweaking the Superman suit, so yeah; I’m glad [to be hearing] good buzz about it.” He then talks in more detail about developing Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman costume, and making sure that Diana will make her big screen debut in full glory. “It’s a thrilling and slightly scary prospect of course. It’s so important to get her right. She really deserves to be presented on-screen in her full glory, so what I do is look at the history of the character has been presented on the big-screen, small-screen, comic books, and graphic novels; we process it all. Then we kind of put that aside and work out what is right for our film, for the cinematic universe that our director Zack Snyder is putting together. We try to create a Wonder Woman relevant for today’s audiences.”
Early word on Wonder Woman’s look in Batman vs. Superman suggests that she will not be donning her iconic bathing suit garb, but will wear some sort of armor. However, Wilkinson says that it’s “absolutely” realistic for her to fight crime in her classic costume, and goes on to tease her mythological influences. “I mean, you just have to look at the Gladiators from ancient Rome, they did their thing… with shield and everything. Yes [it works for Marvel’s Thor] and 300, so let’s see what happens.” With production expected to begin within the next month or so, we will hopefully see these new costumes soon.

Batman vs. Superman (not the final title) is scheduled to hit theaters May 6th, 2016. The follow-up to Man of Steel, the next installment in the DC Cinematic Universe stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, and Laurence Fishburne. Zack Snyder directs from a script by David S. Goyer and Chris Terrio.
