Jai Courtney Talks Prep for SUICIDE SQUAD Production; Possible Details on Jared Leto’s Joker
With Suicide Squad set to begin production next month, actor Jai Courtney has finally commented on preparing for his role as Captain Boomerang. Speaking with Access Hollywood, Courtney discussed the pre-production status of the movie, saying that the cast is finally meeting together this week. “Everyone’s been in training, but we’re yet to kind of all converge and get down, but that’s happening this week. I can’t wait. It’s really cool. It’s going to be [as] big as you can imagine and, you know, it’s a really interesting world.”
Courtney then goes on to praise writer/director David Ayer’s method to preparing actors for his movies, as well as inevitable “friendly” competition within the ensemble cast. “It does attract a certain amount of talent and dedication and [David] really demands that. I mean, I’d heard a lot about what he put the guys through on Fury in order to prepare for that film and it fascinated me. I mean, you don’t always get that. That’s such a privilege as an actor when you are presented with a challenge and expected to really bring it and match and kind of come along. I think the group he’s assembled, there’s probably going to be a really healthy amount of competition between us. You know, not just to do it like the macho elements of like getting in shape and stuff….And you bring out the best in one another when you demand that of each other.” For the rest of Courtney’s interview with Access Hollywood, click the link above.
Last week, Jared Leto finally began his physical transformation into The Joker for Suicide Squad. He cut his beloved hair and beard, and he now dons a blonde look in preparation for the green dye. Ayer teased Leto’s new hairstyle previously on his Twitter page, and he has been offering plenty of behind-the-scenes goodies. In the meantime, a new rumor may reveal which direction Leto is taking for this latest incarnation of Joker.
Insiders have apparently informed Hollywood Life that Leto is focused on pleasing fans with his Joker, and at the same time, he wants to avoid “stepping on the toes” of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger. The latter won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in 2008’s The Dark Knight, so Leto clearly has quite a bit to live up to. Fortunately, he is said to be set on making this version of the character his own and “the best” in Suicide Squad. Leto’s version is reportedly “more cerebral and comedic” than past incarnations.
While this info obviously has yet to be confirmed officially, it does sound plausible. It will surely be interesting to see how Leto depicts the Joker of the DC Cinematic Universe. Stay tuned for more as we have it.
Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters August 5th, 2016. The third installment in the DC Cinematic Universe stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Viola Davis and Jared Leto. David Ayer writes and directs.
