James Wan Comments on His “Fun” AQUAMAN Movie and Exploring the Character’s World

At WonderCon this weekend, director James Wan appeared to promote his next film, The Conjuring 2. At that panel, he spoke with /Film and other journalists about his upcoming DC movie, Aquaman.

Wan comments on his history with comic books, as well as his excitement to explore Aquaman’s world on the big screen. “I was never so in depth with Aquaman as, let’s say, I was with X-Men. I grew up loving X-Men, Spider-Man and Batman. Those are obviously the key big ones, but there’s always something kind of cool about Aquaman still, the idea of creating a huge world that is on our planet. That’s the thing about Aquaman that’s cool is he’s not an alien, right? He’s from our planet and he’s from a society that we’re not privy to in the context of the story. Isn’t it crazy to think that we’ve explored space more than we have explored the depths of our ocean? That just fires up my imagination about potential sea monsters and cool creatures, that kind of stuff.” Considering Wan’s credentials with horror films, it should be very interesting to see his approach to sea monsters and other Atlantean beings.

Wan then says that Aquaman will be “fun,” which is something he brings to all of his movies. He adds that he sees Aquaman as an “underdog” hero; he’s a character who many people make fun of, but he can surpass their expectations. Finally, Wan likes the fact that Aquaman is a relatively new character to be adapted to the big screen, unlike Batman and Superman.
