David Ayer Open to an R-Rated Sequel to SUICIDE SQUAD

Suicide Squad is expected to be yet another big hit for Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment later this year. So much so, that the studio is reportedly developing a sequel already.

Fans had previously suggested that Suicide Squad should be rated R, given the lead characters and subject matter. But, the film is targeting a PG-13 rating. Now, writer-director David Ayer weighs in on the PG-13 rating for this movie, as well as whether the sequel could be an R.

Speaking with MTV, Ayer explains that Suicide Squad was always going to be PG-13. “For an R movie, you have to decide to do it right out the gate, and that was never the case here. We were always going to hit the PG-13 rating.” However, that doesn’t mean Suicide Squad will be without an edge. “But the film is meant to be that,” says Ayer, “It’s got edge, and it’s got attitude. And it’s got its own voice… There’s a lot in the film that’s going to surprise people.”

However, could Suicide Squad 2 be given an R rating? Ayer simply says, “It would be worth lobbying for.” If Suicide Squad is successful enough, WB may give Ayer permission to go into R-rated territory with a sequel. At the same time, however, that would close off the sequel to some audience members who go see the first film.

Do you think Suicide Squad 2 should be rated R?

Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters August 5th. The third installment in the DC Extended Universe stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne, Viola Davis, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Adam Beach, Jay Hernandez and Karen Fukahara. David Ayer writes and directs.
