Jared Leto Talks Joker’s Future, Wants to Appear in Ben Affleck’s BATMAN Film

Jared Leto’s Joker makes his debut in Suicide Squad, which finally hits theaters next Friday. Afterwards, the Clown Prince of Crime is expected to pop up again in the DC Extended Universe. Leto presumably signed a multi-picture contract, which is what caused Ryan Gosling to turn this role down. Now, the Oscar winner weighs in on his future as The Joker.

Speaking with Toronto Sun, Leto expresses interest in playing Joker again. He hopes that Suicide Squad will serve as an introduction to the character. “…I could easily just play the Joker a couple more times and then retire. Because it’s so fulfilling and so creative and it’s so imaginative. It’s really difficult to think about doing anything else!” He adds that if audiences love this Joker, then we’ll probably going to see more of him.

But what film can Joker appear in next? Leto doesn’t confirm or deny speculation of a Justice League cameo, but he would love to pop up in Ben Affleck’s solo Batman movie. “I think it would be incredible to see Batman and the Joker go head-to-head! This Batman and this Joker. I mean, I don’t know, that might be too much! But that would be fun.” Considering the extensive history between Batman and Joker in the DCEU, it would make sense to address it in a solo film.

Another possibility is the planned Suicide Squad sequel. However, Leto is a bit uncertain about the team coming face-to-face with Joker again, saying “…you know, the Joker’s not officially in the Suicide Squad, so they could make another Suicide Squad movie and have somebody else (as the wild card villain). And I would be sad not to be part of the fun.”

Again, however, Leto’s future as Joker will depend on how well received he is in Suicide Squad. But if he does reprise the role, then it will mark the first time an actor has played Joker more than once on the big screen.
