UPDATE: The CW Orders BLACK LIGHTNING Pilot After Fox Passes

Last year, it was announced that Greg Berlanti is tackling another DC television show: Black Lightning. Berlanti is godfathering the project, which is developed by Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil. Fox previously picked up a pilot order, but it looks like the potential series is about to move to a new home.

According to Deadline, Fox has passed on the Black Lightning pilot, which is now eyeing a move to The CW. While a final decision hasn’t been reached yet, The CW is currently the frontrunner for the project’s new home.

Of course, The CW is home to all of Berlanti’s other DC superhero shows: Supergirl, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Arrow. Berlanti previously said that Black Lightning probably won’t cross over with the Arrowverse, but with the series now moving to The CW, will that still be the case?

If Black Lightning doesn’t exist in the main Arrowverse (Earth-1), another possibility is to have it set on Earth-38, aka Supergirl‘s Earth. And even if it’s set on another Earth, they can always figure out a crossover, as some characters can easily travel across the Multiverse.

As for why Fox passed, the network decided that Black Lightning wouldn’t have been a good fit into its current slate, which consists of DC/Vertigo shows Gotham and Lucifer, as well as an untitled X-Men pilot.

With discussions now underway, expect more Black Lightning news to come soon.

UPDATE: It has been officially announced (via Entertainment Weekly) that The CW has ordered the Black Lightning pilot.
