SUICIDE SQUAD Wins Oscar for Best Makeup & Hairstyling
Suicide Squad became the first installment of the DC Extended Universe to be nominated for an Academy Award. The movie was nominated in the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category alongside Star Trek Beyond and A Man Called Ove. And, perhaps in one of the biggest surprise of the ceremony, Task Force X won.
At the Oscars last night, Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini and Christopher Nelson took home the award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for their work on Suicide Squad. It was the only comic book movie to win an Oscar this year. This also marks the first time that a DC Comics adaptation won an award since 2009, when The Dark Knight picked up Best Sound Editing and a posthumous Best Supporting Actor trophy for Heath Ledger.
I know what you’re thinking. A critically panned superhero movie winning an Academy Award? Yes, that does sound a bit bizarre. But honestly, if Suicide Squad succeeded in any category, it was the makeup and hairstyling. Killer Croc’s makeup was done really well, while characters like Diablo and Harley Quinn looked great. It’s not like the film won for Best Adapted Screenplay or anything.
