Ciarán Hinds Talks Playing JUSTICE LEAGUE Villain Steppenwolf

Last year, it was reported that actor Ciarán Hinds was cast as the villainous Steppenwolf in DC Films’ Justice League. In the movie, Steppenwolf leads an army of Parademons to Earth in search of three Mother Boxes.

Now, Hinds confirms the casting in an interview with The Independent, where he teases his portrayal of the New God.

Hinds admits that he wasn’t familiar with comic books before taking the role, while confirming that he did play the character with motion capture. For this process, Hinds wore a “very tight and embarrassing” suit, and he explains, “Basically they’re going to construct something, digitally, and then they will use my eyes and mouth.” He also received advice from Liam Neeson, who had recently played a motion-capture character in A Monster Calls.

Additionally, Hinds reveals new details on Steppenwolf, as well as his connection to Darkseid. “He’s old, tired, still trying to get out of his own enslavement to Darkseid, [but] he has to keep on this line to try and take over worlds.” In the comics, Steppenwolf is the uncle of Darkseid, and the two are key players in DC’s New Gods lore. So, it’s no surprise that this close connection would carry over to Justice League. But could we actually see Darkseid himself in this film? We’ll have to wait and see.

Stay tuned for more as we have it.

Justice League is scheduled to hit theaters November 17th.
