Ben Affleck’s Batman Future After JUSTICE LEAGUE in Doubt

So far, Ben Affleck has played Batman in three movies: Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, and this fall’s Justice League. He has also been attached to star in The Batman and a potential Justice League sequel. However, there has been some doubt online about just how long Affleck will keep playing Batman. He stepped down from The Batman as a director, while his script has been shelved.

Now, a new report suggests that Affleck might hang up the cape and cowl sooner than later.

A source has told The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros. is working on creating a “graceful” exit for Affleck’s Batman. It would be addressed in an upcoming DC film. It’s unknown which movie that would be, but THR suggests that Affleck may not even star in The Batman.

However, The Batman director Matt Reeves has been saying that he intends to keep Affleck in the role, while WB chief Toby Emmerich tells THR, “Ben is our Batman. We love him as Batman. We want to keep him in the cowl as long as we can.”

But if Affleck does leave the role soon, would it be that shocking? He is in his mid-40s now, and he’ll be pushing 50 by the time The Batman would hit theaters (presumably 2019). There are few actors in that age range who can consistently pull off multiple blockbuster films in a row. Batman is not only a huge character and a key player in the DCEU, but playing this character results in a lot of pressure from fans to deliver. All these factors, combined with Affleck’s recent personal issues, may just lead to him quitting soon.

So if Affleck does leave the Batman role, what happens next? The Batman franchise has a history of recasting actors – see Val Kilmer and George Clooney. Or, if they write out Bruce Wayne completely, they can have another character in the cowl. In the comics, characters like Dick Grayson, Jean-Paul Valley, and Terry McGinnis. Speaking of Dick Grayson, WB happens to be developing a Nightwing movie…

But yeah, none of this is set in stone right now. Anything is possible. Hopefully, we’ll hear something official soon. Stay tuned.
