Why Henry Cavill Needs to Play Superman Again

DC‘s movie universe began in 2013 with the release of Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill as Superman. Since then, Cavill has reprised the role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, cementing him as one of the faces of the franchise. He was expected to star in more movies, but then doubt entered the picture.

Justice League‘s sequels were cancelled, Shazam! had a headless Superman cameo, and even plans for another Superman standalone film were put on hold. In 2018, it was reported that Warner Bros. was moving away from Superman, and Cavill would not reprise the role. The actor has remained hopeful that he will play Superman again, but despite rumors, nothing has been confirmed yet.

Hopefully, when Superman does return to the big screen, it will be Cavill in the role again. Here, we discuss why we want to see it.

He Loves the Character

It’s easy to find actors who are passionate about their superhero roles, and Cavill is no exception. He has made his love for Superman known over the years. He has even shared his vision for what he wants to see in the character’s next solo film, should it happen. Considering the passion he has for Superman, WB would be foolish to let him go. It would be better than hiring a new actor who is potentially not invested in the character or his lore.

One More Movie on His Contract

Currently, Cavill is under contract to play Superman in one more movie. That would ideally be another solo film. And sometimes, one more movie is all you need. If the movie happens and it’s a hit, WB will surely resign Cavill for another contract. Sure, it would be a gamble to do another movie without the guarantee of more, but if it works, then it’ll pay off. It would also give Cavill the opportunity to make the movie he wants to make, something he didn’t have much free reign with in prior movies.

A Familiar Face With More Clout

Again, it would make more sense logistically to bring in Cavill than a new Superman actor. Even if audiences weren’t crazy about his movies, they still recognize Cavill as Superman. A reboot is always risky, so in this case, playing it safe is needed. Also, Cavill has been building up his filmography in recent years. Mission: Impossible – Fallout was a big hit, while he headlines Netflix’s successful series The Witcher. Both projects give Cavill more clout, and they will surely make him a more recognizable face to audiences.

Some Redemption

Cavill’s current movies as Superman were not as successful as WB hoped for, surely. Man of Steel received mixed reception, while Batman v Superman was critically panned and received weak box office legs. Both movies were criticized for their darker take on Superman. When the character had a lighter portrayal in Justice League, all that people could talk about in that movie was Superman’s CGI mouth.

So, Cavill’s Kal-El really needs some redemption in the public eye. If he got one more chance to do a movie, then maybe that will show audiences how great he is in the role. Again, it may be a risk, but if Cavill receive free reign to tell a lighter, more optimistic Superman story, then watch it pay off.
