UPDATE: Mariah Carey Joins THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE Cast as…

As we get closer to the release of The LEGO Batman Movie, the LEGO Movie spin-off continues to build an exciting voice cast. Will Arnett will return as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Cera is Robin, Rosario Dawson is Barbara Gordon, Ralph Fiennes is Alfred Pennyworth and Zach Galifianakis will play The Joker. And now, the role of Commissioner Gordon has been cast…but it’s not who you’d expect.

According to Deadline, Mariah Carey is in talks to voice Commissioner Gordon in The LEGO Batman Movie. A beloved singer, Carey is also an actress, having appeared in films such as Precious and Lee Daniels’ The Butler.

Obviously, Commissioner Jim Gordon is traditionally a male character. So for this movie, will Jim’s wife – and Barbara’s mother – be the Commissioner instead? Or is the character getting gender-swapped completely? Expect more news to come soon.

Chris McKay directs The LEGO Batman Movie, which was written by Seth Grahame-Smith. The animated film is set to hit theaters on February 10th, 2017.

UPDATE: In its report on the news, The Hollywood Reporter says that Carey is in fact not playing Commissioner Gordon. Rather, she is playing the Mayor of Gotham City. Carry on.
