DEBUNKED: Details on Doomsday’s Evolution in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE; “Larger Threat” Teased

UPDATE: It appears that the following interview has been fabricated, as Première‘s Twitter account has denied publishing it. Apparently, the story originated from Cosmic Book News – aka, one of the most notoriously unreliable comic book sites on the Internet.

We apologize for the inconvenience. The original story is as follows.

The latest trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice confirmed one of the film’s most prevalent rumors: Doomsday is one of the villains, and the Trinity – Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman – team up to fight him. The trailer has spawned much controversy, particularly regarding Doomsday’s look and “too much” footage being shown. The common complaint is that the trailer pretty much showed the whole movie in a three-minute format. However, an individual involved with the film confirms that there is much, much more that we have yet to see in the marketing – something we had previously theorized.

Speaking with Premiere (via Comic Book Movie), Batman v Superman production designer Patrick Tatopoulos commented on Doomsday’s role in the film, mentioning an “evolution” for the brute force. Oh, and don’t expect the Death of Superman story – the most popular arc featuring Doomsday – to be adapted here. “We are able to tell a story in a fresh way. Doomsday is an evolution essentially. Fans may be aware of the Death of Superman story, but this is handled in such a new way.”

Tatopoulos suggests that this “evolution” is in fact Lex Luthor’s creation of Doomsday in the movie. He explains, “When the film is called Batman v or versus Superman, it really has a lot of levels to the meaning. Superman isn’t just killed off at the end of something. We see how he evolves as part of Lex’s plan to protect the world. Seeing the Superman we know, be gone, and then replaced with this reproduction is really going to make fans think of how we look at these super beings. It was especially interesting to figure out, how would you create Superman from Zod… then how would that involve into Doomsday.”

Finally, the production designer offers some very intriguing hints on what else to expect in Batman v Superman. Regarding the new trailer “spoiling” the movie, Tatopoulos says that the film’s timeframe and sequence of events will “surprise” fans. One way that will do so is the arrival of a “larger threat.” In other words, “Doomsday isn’t just the final act. Those feeling they may know too much this early, are going to be in for a true surprise. That’s something to find out on March 25th.”

So far, Lex Luthor and Doomsday are the confirmed villains in Batman v Superman. But a “larger threat”? If I had to guess, I would say that we may be getting our first look at the Justice League Part One villain by the end of this movie. That villain has been rumored to be either Brainiac or Darkseid; maybe it could be someone else entirely. Either way, perhaps this villain will arrive near the end of Dawn of Justice, and the Trinity decides to recruit other heroes to fight this threat. This is where Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg could come int. But, that is just speculation of mine.

Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
