A SUICIDE SQUAD Sequel is Reportedly Already in the Works at Warner Bros.

Following a stellar trailer released earlier this year, Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad is already one of the year’s most anticipated movies. So far, it is looking to be a really big hit for the studio. So, unsurprisingly, news has come for a potential sequel.

It was revealed by the trades last night that Suicide Squad director David Ayer and star Will Smith will re-team on a new movie called Bright. Max Landis wrote the script, while Joel Edgerton is in talks to co-star. While a production start date hasn’t been confirmed, the hope is for Bright to begin filming later this year. Why?

Well, according to both Variety and The Wrap, Warner Bros. is planning a 2017 production start date for Suicide Squad 2. The studio wants both Ayer and Smith to return for the follow-up. So, they would go shoot Bright this year and be ready for Suicide Squad 2 the next year.

Of course, these plans can easily change – after all, the first movie isn’t out for a few more months – but WB already developing a sequel is a big sign of confidence for the supervillain team-up.

So, if Suicide Squad 2 starts shooting in 2017, then it could hit theaters in 2018 or 2019. It’ll be interesting to see how it fits into WB’s rapidly-growing DC Extended Universe slate. Don’t be surprised if we get an official release date for this sequel later this year, probably around the time of Suicide Squad‘s release. Stay tuned for more news as we have it.

Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters August 5th. The third installment in the DC Extended Universe stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne, Viola Davis, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Adam Beach, Jay Hernandez and Karen Fukahara. David Ayer writes and directs.
