Warner Bros. Developing New DC Movie Starring Harley Quinn and Other Female Characters

One of the most anticipated characters in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie is Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie. Harley already has a huge fanbase, and that will only grow after her big screen debut. So, it shouldn’t be surprising to hear that we’ll be seeing much more of the character. However, this news comes with an interesting twist.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has begun to develop a spin-off movie starring Harley Quinn. Margot Robbie will reprise the role, and she is also on board as a producer. An unnamed female screenwriter has been hired to pen the script.

But this is not a solo Harley Quinn movie. Apparently, in addition to Harley, the film will focus on a slew of DC Comics’ female heroes and villains. So far, the movie is expected to include Batgirl and the Birds of Prey, among others.

A Birds of Prey movie was rumored to be in the works several months ago, with Black Canary and Batgirl expected to star. Meanwhile, Jena Malone has been rumored to be playing Barbara Gordon for a while, even after she was cut from the theatrical version of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. (She’s in the Ultimate Edition, however.)

THR says that Robbie is the driving force for putting this untitled movie into development. During her preparation to play Harley, she heavily researched the comics and fell in love with DC’s female characters. So, she teamed up with the screenwriter to develop the project, and WB was on board with it.

This is certainly a unique way for WB to expand the DC Extended Universe. Not only does the film cash in on Harley Quinn’s popularity, but it will also bring some focus on DC’s strong ensemble of female characters. Good move.

Stay tuned for more news on this movie as we have it.
