SUICIDE SQUAD Surpasses $500 Million at the Worldwide Box Office

Suicide Squad opened two weeks ago, and despite critics’ negative reviews and a 67% drop in its second weekend, the DC film has been doing well at the box office. Today, it has been confirmed (via Deadline) that the movie has surpassed a key milestone in its theatrical run.

Today, Suicide Squad has crossed the $500 million mark worldwide. Currently, the film has grossed over $238 million domestically and $271 million overseas. This brings its worldwide total to $509 million after just 13 days of release. Suicide Squad is the eleventh biggest movie of 2016 so far, and after this weekend, it should crack the top ten.

Suicide Squad is expected to hold on to the #1 spot in North America this weekend. Projections suggest that the movie will gross $20-22 million, which would be a 50% drop from last weekend. If these projections hold, Suicide Squad will become the fifth film of 2016 to be #1 for three weekends in a row.

Warner Bros. reportedly spent $325 million to both produce and market the movie, so to break even, its final gross has to be around $650 million worldwide. If Suicide Squad continues to do well over the next few weeks, it might just hit that number. We’ll have to wait and see.

Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, Warner Bros. President of Worldwide Distribution, had this to say about Suicide Squad‘s box office success. “It is incredibly rewarding to see audiences around the world coming out in such a big way for Suicide Squad. We have several major markets yet to open, and expect to continue seeing strong returns at the box office for the weeks to come.”
