Filmmaker J.A. Bayona Expresses Interest in Directing a Superman Movie

The last solo Superman movie was 2013’s Man of Steel, which serves as the first installment of the DC Extended Universe. The character went on to star in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, while he will be in the two Justice League movies. But when will we see another standalone Superman film?

Warner Bros. confirmed in 2014 that a solo Man of Steel sequel was in the works, likely to be released by 2020. Additionally, a report last year reaffirmed that the film is in “active” development, and that it’s still a top priority for the studio. While a director is not attached yet, one filmmaker has expressed a desire to do a Superman movie.

During a Reddit AMA, A Monster Calls and Jurassic World 2 director J.A. Bayona reveals that his dream film to make is none other than a Superman movie. He explains, “The first movie I saw in my life was Superman. I was three years old. The first memory I had was Christopher Reeve flying in the suit. Directing a Superman film would be great. I always wanted to be Superman. That’s the film that made me want to become a director.”

Bayona is shooting Jurassic World 2 this year for a summer 2018 release. After that, he’s not yet attached to any other movies. Thus, he could theoretically shoot Man of Steel 2 for, say, a 2020 release.

I was a big fan of Bayona’s 2012 film, The Impossible, and I’m excited to see his take on the Jurassic franchise. I would love to see him direct Man of Steel 2 or any other solo Superman movie in the future.
