The CW Resurrects CONSTANTINE as an Animated Series on CW Seed
After NBC’s cancellation of Constantine, the short lived series’ fanbase became very vocal in an attempt to bring it back. While a second season was not picked up by any other network, the John Constantine character appeared on an episode of The CW’s Arrow, thus integrating him into the greater Arrowverse. Despite a few rumors, The CW never revisited the character…until now.
At the Television Critics Association winter tour yesterday (via THR), it was announced that CW Seed will continue Constantine as an animated series. The series will consist of 5-6 ten minute episodes. Greg Berlanti and David S. Goyer are among the producers.
Matt Ryan will reprise the role again, after playing Constantine on the NBC series and Arrow. He also voices the character in the Justice League Dark animated movie, which is unconnected to the Arrowverse.
Constantine marks the third DC Comics animated series on CW Seed. Vixen has run for two seasons, while Freedom Fighters: The Ray premieres this year. Constantine will debut sometime during the 2017-2018 season.
While Constantine will have new life in animation, The CW president Mark Pedowitz says that there are no plans to bring back the character in live action, despite his interest in doing so.
Even though fans have been hoping for a proper second season of Constantine, this animated series should serve as a nice substitute. And who knows; if it’s a success, maybe it’ll lead to Constantine resurfacing in the live action Arrowverse.
