Box Office: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Surpasses First Film, Retains #2 Spot This Weekend
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been out in theaters worldwide for about a month now, and it has proven to be yet another box office hit for the studio. This weekend, the sequel has maintained an impressive hold and has outgrossed its predecessor.
Per Box Office Mojo, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has held on to the #2 spot in its fourth week of release, grossing an estimated $19.9 million. This puts it ahead of new release Baywatch ($18.1 million), but behind Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ($62.2 million).
In more good news, Vol. 2 has now surpassed the original Guardians of the Galaxy. The sequel has now grossed $333.2 million domestically and $450.1 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $783.3 million. By contrast, back in 2014, the first Guardians grossed $333.2 million domestically, $440.2 million internationally, and $773.3 million worldwide.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now the fifth highest grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, coming in behind both Avengers movies, Iron Man 3, and Captain America: Civil War. Since the film’s theatrical income is starting to slow down, it probably won’t go higher than #5, either domestically or worldwide.
