GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Opens With Estimated $145 Million Weekend

After opening last week in the UK and other countries, Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has arrived in North America. The highly anticipated sequel has been generating positive reviews from critics, as well as an “A” CinemaScore from audiences. Now, we have the estimated results from its domestic opening weekend.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has opened with an estimated $145 million domestically. That’s much higher than the original film’s $94.3 million debut. This is also the fifth largest opening for a Marvel movie, behind the two Avengers films, Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Civil War.

Overseas, Guardians added another $124 million for a total of $282.6 million. This brings the film’s worldwide total to an estimated $427.6 million. This is a very impressive opening, especially since this team of a-holes was just an obscure comic book property just a few years ago. But the first film’s surprise success and audiences’ growing love for the characters have led to a very successful sequel.

Guardians‘ opening has also pushed Marvel Studios’ total box office gross to a colossal $11 billion. After the film’s theatrical run concludes and Marvel releases Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok, that number could go up to $13 billion by year’s end. Crazy.
