Zack Snyder Will Reportedly Have a “Significantly” Smaller Role in DC Films Post-JUSTICE LEAGUE

From the very beginning, Zack Snyder has been a huge creative influence in the formation of the DC Extended Universe. He has directed Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and this fall’s Justice League. He has also been a producer on the other DC movies, including this summer’s smash hit Wonder Woman. However, it looks like Snyder’s role in the mega-franchise is decreasing.

According to Mashable, Zack and his wife, Deborah, will have “significantly” smaller roles in the DCEU going forward. They’ll still receive credit as director and producer, respectively, for Justice League – which they left during post-production earlier this year, following a devastating family tragedy – but for future films, their roles may not be any bigger than that of producer. They won’t have near as much creative influence as they did in the beginning. However, Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich said in a statement that the Snyders will continue to play a key role in upcoming DC movies and other studio projects.

Snyder has been attached to direct a Justice League sequel for a couple years, but if this report is true, then that probably won’t happen after all. However, Snyder is still attached as a producer to several upcoming films, such as Aquaman, Suicide Squad 2, and The Flash/Flashpoint.

DC Films co-chief Geoff Johns will continue to be a key creative influence for the franchise. Joining him will be Joss Whedon, who is overseeing Justice League reshoots and will write and direct a Batgirl movie. Whedon is now said to be a “major” part of DC’s creative team. However, Suicide Squad director David Ayer is reportedly not part of DC’s future plans, despite initially being attached to helm Gotham City Sirens.

The news of Snyder’s decreased role is either good or bad, depending on who you’re asking. While the filmmaker has a very devoted group of fans, there are just as many who despite his movies (and even attack him personally, which is never okay). Snyder’s directorial style is very polarizing, with Batman v Superman particularly coming under fire from critics. But that’s not all, as the WB team has reportedly been concerned about the Snyders’ tendency to increase budgets, and the studio has been itching to pursue a new creative direction – as seen in Wonder Woman.

Regardless, if this news is true, then it’s the end of a noteworthy run for Snyder. He has directed three huge movies in a row based on the world’s most iconic superheroes. It’s only deserving that he takes a break, especially in light of recent events.
